Following the presentation of an anti-immigration bill in the German parliament, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets and demonstrated against the ruling party's cooperation with the far-right.

According to Euronews, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Germany to protest the immigration policy of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its policies in parliament.

The streets of several German cities were the scene of demonstrations against the cooperation between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD). The cities of Aachen, Augsburg, Braunschweig, Bremen, Cologne, Essen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Leipzig and a number of smaller cities witnessed mass demonstrations. It is said that Berlin will also witness demonstrations today, Sunday.

The protesters also objected to the candidacy of Friedrich Mertz, the candidate of the Christian Democratic Union, who proposed two anti-immigration bills to parliament last week.

Mertz, the front-runner in next month's German election, broke his party's long-standing pledge not to cooperate with the far-right on Wednesday after accepting the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD)'s vote to pass an immigration bill.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, has been in turmoil since the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Schulz's three-party coalition with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

The country's election is scheduled for February 23.
