Man arrested in occupied territories on suspicion of spying for Iran

Israel’s police and the Shin Bet said in a joint statement that they had arrested a resident of Ashkelon over the past few months on suspicion of spying for Iran.

According to a report by the Times of Israel, Amir Malka, a 37-year-old resident of the occupied territories, was arrested on allegations that he received several thousand dollars as payment for carrying out supposed espionage activities on behalf of Iran.

The outlet reported that he was detained last month during an investigation conducted by Jerusalem district detectives and the Shin Bet. However, Israeli police have not provided details about the nature of the alleged espionage.

He is expected to be indicted today at the Beersheba District Court.

Malka faces charges at a time when Israeli security agencies are struggling to prevent Israeli citizens from spying for Iran. The Times of Israel claims that Iran, especially since the 12-day war in June, has established an extensive network to recruit Israelis for espionage activities.

It appears that the Shin Bet has recently shifted its approach; instead of merely cracking down on offenders, the agency is now working with local municipalities and seeking their assistance in spreading information to counter this trend.
