Major shake-up in Israeli army as dozens of senior officers summoned

The Chief of Staff of the Israeli army has summoned dozens of senior General Staff officers following the release of the investigative committee’s findings on the causes of Israel’s failure and intelligence collapse during the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation on October 7, 2023. Israeli media have described the move as an “earthquake” within the military.

According to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff of the Israeli army, decided—after the announcement of the investigative committee’s findings led by retired General Sami Turgeman—to take measures against several senior officers. These officers had held key positions before and during the Al-Aqsa Flood operation on October 7, 2023.

The report says that these decisions will be implemented during a series of urgent meetings scheduled for today, Sunday, between Zamir and the concerned officers. This move is considered one of the most sensitive actions taken since the beginning of the war and could trigger a “seismic shock” within the Israeli army.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, in addition to summoning commanders from military intelligence and the former head of the army’s operations directorate, Zamir has also summoned a large number of General Staff officers who held sensitive positions prior to October 7, 2023.

The summonses were reportedly issued individually, and the Chief of Staff’s office has been working intensively to complete all meetings before 8 p.m. local time—the start of the nightly news broadcasts on Israeli television networks.

According to the report, the measures Zamir intends to take include personal accountability for shortcomings before and during the events of October 7 (Al-Aqsa Flood). Others are expected to receive formal directives or reprimands, which may include disciplinary or organizational actions.

The newspaper adds that some officers will meet directly with Zamir, while others will meet with his deputy, Tamir Yadai. All of the summoned individuals are officers who had already concluded their military service in the recent period.

However, Yedioth Ahronoth notes that these actions have already sparked heated internal debate within current and former Israeli military circles. Senior officers have expressed concern that the measures may selectively target certain officials while exempting others.
