Florida carries out its sixteenth execution of 2025

According to U.S. media, 66-year-old death row inmate Brian Frederick Jennings was executed on Thursday evening local time using a three-drug lethal injection protocol.

Florida has now executed 16 people this year, and two additional executions are scheduled before the end of 2025.

The scheduled executions include Richard Berry Randolph on November 20 and Mark Allen Geralds on December 9, which will bring Florida’s total for the year to 18.

Jennings, a former U.S. Marine, was one of three inmates scheduled to be executed in the United States this week.

Florida currently holds the record for the highest number of executions carried out in the U.S. this year.

Since the beginning of 2025, a total of 42 people have been executed nationwide. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, at least 16 more executions are planned for the remainder of 2025 and throughout 2026.

Meanwhile, South Carolina is set to carry out its third execution by firing squad this Friday.

In recent years, the United States has revived the use of firing squads after several executions by other methods, including lethal injection, failed or encountered complications.

South Carolina had paused executions for 13 years for these reasons, resuming them in September 2024. Since then, the state has executed four inmates by lethal injection and two by firing squad.

South Carolina is among several states where the electric chair remains a legal method of execution.

Three other recent executions by firing squad in the U.S. were carried out in Utah. The method is also legal in Idaho and can be used as an alternative in Oklahoma and Mississippi if other methods are not available.
