Colombia suspends intelligence sharing with the United States

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has ordered the country’s security forces to suspend information sharing with U.S. intelligence agencies as long as Washington continues its attacks on boats in the Caribbean.

According to Reuters, Petro wrote in a post on X that, despite the history of cooperation between the two countries in combating drug trafficking, “the fight against drugs must comply with the human rights of the people of the Caribbean.”

He added that the suspension of intelligence sharing would remain in effect “as long as missile attacks on boats in the Caribbean continue.”

Petro’s decision comes amid a CNN report that the United Kingdom has also halted intelligence sharing with the United States over concerns that the data it provided was being used by Washington to carry out lethal strikes against suspected drug traffickers.

The report stated that British officials believe these attacks violate international law.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk described the strikes as “unacceptable” and called for an independent investigation into what he termed “extrajudicial killings.”

In recent weeks, the United States has conducted several attacks on boats it claims were carrying narcotics, asserting that the vessels had departed from Venezuela.
