Iraq’s 2025 elections see turnout surpass 55%
On Tuesday, in a decisive and sensitive period for both Iraq and the wider region, Iraqis headed to the polls with an unexpectedly high turnout exceeding 55%, to elect a new parliament.
According to the Independent High Electoral Commission, more than 12 million out of 21 million eligible voters participated in the elections — a sharp increase compared to the 41% turnout recorded in 2021.
The Commission stated that after receiving results from 99.7% of polling stations, voter participation exceeded 55%.
Based on the Commission’s statement, the total number of voters in both the general and special elections in Iraq has surpassed 12 million.
Statistics released by the Commission show that among members of the armed forces and security personnel, about 1,084,000 out of 1.3 million eligible voters cast their ballots. Among internally displaced persons, roughly 20,000 out of 26,000 eligible individuals took part in the election.
Overall voter participation has reached more than 12 million out of a total of over 21 million eligible voters.
Following the elections, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani wrote on X:
“The noble people of Iraq, with a turnout exceeding 55% in the parliamentary elections, have taken another step toward safeguarding their democratic and constitutional system.”
He added: “This is yet another success on the path to restoring citizens’ trust — a goal we have placed at the top of our government’s priorities. By the grace of God, our commitment to achieving real change and fulfilling our people’s aspirations has borne fruit today through the conscious and responsible participation of our noble citizens, to whom we extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation.”
Al-Sudani further emphasized that “all credit for the country’s continued progress, accelerating achievements, and economic development belongs to the people of Iraq.”
Meanwhile, the head of Iraq’s Supreme Electoral Security Committee stated that “the process is not yet complete and will continue until all ballot boxes are transferred to the Commission’s warehouses.”
