Two French police officers charged with raping female detainee
According to France 24, authorities said a short video of the incident was discovered on the mobile phone of one of the officers.
The officers were suspended from duty after the woman accused them of attacking her earlier this week at the Bobigny Judicial Court detention center, located in the northeastern suburbs of Paris.
A source close to the case said the 26-year-old woman had been referred to the public prosecutor’s office due to parental negligence.
The Paris prosecutor stated that the two police officers have been charged with rape and sexual harassment, abusing their authority, and are currently in pre-trial detention.
The prosecutor added that the decision to charge the officers was based on the victim’s testimony, which has been corroborated by several elements of the case, including the video.
Laurent Nunez, France’s Interior Minister, said this week: “If proven, these actions are extremely serious and unacceptable.”
France has recently been shaken by a series of high-profile sexual assault cases that have sparked widespread debate about consent.
This week, the French parliament passed a new law on sexual assault.
Human rights activists warn that France is facing a deep crisis, and without reforms, sexual violence will continue at alarming rates. They highlight that a major concern is that a high percentage of sexual assault cases go unprosecuted due to lack of evidence, judicial delays, and cultural denial.
In September 2025, the Council of Europe called for immediate action on this issue in France, but human rights groups say no substantial changes have been implemented.
