A knife attack at a train station has left at least 10 people injured, with nine reportedly in critical condition.

British police announced that at least 10 passengers were wounded in a knife attack at a train station in Cambridgeshire, eastern England.

According to the police statement, all 10 victims were taken to hospital; nine of them are believed to have sustained life-threatening injuries, while one person is being treated for minor wounds. No fatalities have been reported so far.

The Chief of the British Transport Police described the incident as a “major event” and said the Counter Terrorism Police are assisting in the investigation.

“We are conducting urgent inquiries to determine what happened, and it may take some time before we can confirm any further details. At this early stage, it would be inappropriate to speculate on possible motives,” he added.

Police reported that two suspects were arrested near the town of Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire.

Initially, police had designated the event under the codename Operation Plato—a term used when responding to a potential terrorist attack—but later lifted the status.

The identities and motives of the attackers have not yet been disclosed.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “deeply concerning” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she was “deeply saddened” to hear about the stabbings. She confirmed she is receiving regular updates on the investigation and urged the public to avoid speculation at this early stage.

According to official government data, knife crime in the UK has been steadily rising since 2011.

Although the UK claims to have some of the world’s strictest gun control laws, widespread knife crime has become a national crisis. Experts warn that the growing involvement of children and teenagers in such crimes is particularly alarming.

The severity of the crisis has led some observers to label Britain the “knife-crime capital of Europe.”

On Wednesday, the Home Office announced that nearly 60,000 blades have been seized or surrendered as part of the government’s plan to halve knife-related crime within a decade.

Carrying a knife in public in the UK can result in a prison sentence of up to four years.

Earlier in October, a knife attack at a synagogue in Manchester left two people dead, one of whom was accidentally shot by police responding to the scene.

Britain tops Europe in knife-crime statistics

According to Reolink, the UK ranks highest among all European countries for violent crimes involving knives and other bladed weapons.

Studies show the country faces a persistent knife-crime crisis, with police recording an average of 282 knife-related offenses every day.

This translates to a violent crime rate (VCR) of 8.4 incidents per 1,000 residents annually, with knife crimes accounting for 12% of all violent offenses.

On average, a fatal stabbing occurs every 17 hours across the UK. Teenagers aged 15–19 face the highest risk—four times more likely to be stabbed than adults aged 30–44.

Urban areas account for 78% of knife-related incidents. Offenses rise by 32% on weekends and by 28% during summer months (June to August) compared to winter.

While overall knife crime has fallen about 9% since 2021, incidents involving youths under 16 have increased by 14%. Hospital data shows that 42% of stabbing victims do not report the assaults to police, leading to underreported official statistics.

Knife violence is concentrated in specific urban centers. The 10 cities with the highest knife-crime rates show alarming trends—London alone records around 14,577 knife-related crimes annually, nearly double the national average.

The capital sees about 40 knife crimes per day, three to four of which require hospitalization.

Deadly knife crime crisis in London

According to Deutsche Welle, knife and bladed-weapon offenses among young people in the UK are on the rise, sparking serious public concern.

Britain now records over 50,000 knife attacks annually, a figure that has alarmed experts.

London alone registers more knife-related incidents than the entire nation of Germany each year. Social media is filled with videos of rival gangs and young individuals fighting with machetes, swords, or kitchen knives.

The easy availability and widespread possession of knives in the UK have created a vicious cycle of weapon carrying and violence. Although lawmakers have repeatedly tried to tackle the issue through bans, harsher penalties, and police crackdowns, the problem persists.

Experts and social workers argue that tougher laws alone are not enough. They emphasize that only a combination of preventive, social, and community measures can offer young people alternatives to violence. Knife crime, they say, is not merely a public-safety issue—it is a deep-rooted social problem.

Why is knife crime so high in the UK?

The high rate of knife crime in Britain stems from deep social problems. Organized criminal groups have increasingly recruited minors, exploiting over 12,000 children every year.

These gangs arm children and teenagers with knives, fueling the cycle of violence.

Economic deprivation provides fertile ground for crime and aggression, while policing challenges make the situation even more complex.
