Why Louvre thieves chose Algeria and Mali to escape?
According to the report, the suspects attempted to flee to Algeria and Mali because neither country has an extradition treaty with France, making them ideal refuges for fugitives trying to avoid capture by French authorities.
Two suspects, both in their early thirties, were reportedly arrested while attempting to board flights bound for these countries.
Investigations have also raised suspicions of possible inside involvement, as The Telegraph reported that one of the museum’s security guards may have played a role in facilitating the theft.
Meanwhile, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, who is leading the investigation, expressed strong anger over the premature leak of the suspects’ arrests to the media.
In a press statement, Beccuau said:
“I strongly condemn the hasty disclosure of this information by individuals with insider knowledge. Such leaks disregard the requirements of the ongoing investigation and can seriously undermine the work of over a hundred officers currently searching for the stolen jewels and all those involved in the crime.”
