Spanish prime minister: Peace should not shield Gaza’s perpetrators of genocide

Spain’s Prime Minister emphasized today that the Gaza ceasefire should not come at the expense of justice, and those responsible for crimes in the enclave must be held accountable.

“Peace cannot mean forgetting; it cannot mean impunity. Those who played a key role in the genocide in Gaza must answer to justice,” Pedro Sánchez said today in an interview with a Spanish radio station following the establishment of the Gaza ceasefire.

Sánchez referred to his time at the United Nations during the Kosovo War and the convictions issued for war crimes, stating: “There is still much work ahead. Many questions remain unanswered.”

The Spanish Prime Minister added that his country and Europe will play a key role in peace efforts, a role that will involve not only reconstruction but also “shaping a two-state solution and peace based on international law.”

Having attended the Gaza ceasefire signing ceremony in Egypt yesterday, Sánchez did not rule out the deployment of Spanish forces to Gaza as peacekeepers. He also confirmed that Madrid will maintain an arms embargo on Israel until the ceasefire is stabilized and the process decisively moves toward lasting peace.
