German coalition government’s popularity falls to lowest level
The coalition of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), under Friedrich Merz, reached its lowest approval ratings in a Sunday survey conducted by the polling institute INSA.
The survey, commissioned by the newspaper Bild, showed that the governing parties together received only 38 percent of the vote, marking the coalition’s worst performance since coming to power in early May.
According to the poll, the Christian Democratic Union’s share of the vote fell by one percentage point compared to the previous week, reaching 24 percent. Their coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party, also dropped by one point to 14 percent.
The poll also indicated that if a federal election were held on Sunday, 26 percent of respondents would vote for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), maintaining the party’s share from the previous week.
