UK, Canada, and Australia recognize the state of Palestine
The Prime Ministers of the UK, Canada, and Australia issued statements declaring their decision to recognize the State of Palestine.
In this context, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, while announcing recognition of an independent Palestinian state and accusing Hamas, stated that the movement will have no place in the future of Palestine.
He said: “Hopes for a two-state solution are fading, but we must not allow that light to go out.”
The office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also stated: “Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and expresses its readiness to partner in achieving a peaceful future for both Palestine and Israel.”
The office of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a statement saying: “As of today, Sunday, September 21, Australia recognizes the independent and sovereign State of Palestine.”
Albanese further noted, referring to the UK’s earlier decision to recognize Palestine: “Australia’s recognition of Palestine today, alongside similar decisions by Canada and the UK, is part of a coordinated international effort to strengthen the two-state solution.”
French President Emmanuel Macron also announced on Friday that he plans to recognize Palestine in New York on Monday.
Meanwhile, the German government, which has remained cautious and hesitant on this matter, is facing public and civil society pressure to take a stance similar to other European countries.
In this regard, Kaja Kallas, responsible for EU foreign policy, has urged Germany to join sanctions against Israel, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has suggested suspending trade privileges with Israel.
Domestic pressure in Germany is also increasing. The center-left Social Democratic Party in Chancellor Merz’s coalition government has welcomed sanctions against Israel, while the opposition Green Party has gone further, telling the German Press Agency that Merz and his Foreign Minister Johannes Wadewol must make a decision: whether to stand with those working for peace for Palestinians and Israelis, or remain passive and watch how the Zionist cabinet and its far-right members destroy Gaza and increasingly push the prospect of peace and freedom for Israeli hostages further away.
While the German Chancellor maintains his official position on Palestine, the majority of the German population clearly opposes him. According to a poll conducted last month by the German public opinion research institute Forsa, 54% of German voters supported the creation of an independent Palestinian state and its recognition, while only 31% were opposed
