New claims on Iran’s nuclear issue in IAEA’s latest quarterly reports

On the eve of the Board of Governors meeting, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) presented two new quarterly reports on Iran’s nuclear program to member states, which—despite being classified—have leaked to the media.

According to Reuters, the reports claim that Iran’s uranium stockpiles enriched up to 60% had increased slightly just before Israeli attacks in June. The reports assert that, at that time, Iran’s uranium stockpiles were higher than in the previous report.

Another part of the reports claim that Iran and the IAEA have not reached an agreement on resuming inspections of nuclear facilities that were targeted in June by aggressive actions from the U.S. and Israel.

At the same time, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, told Reuters that he is trying to leave room for diplomacy on Iran’s nuclear issue. He said that negotiations between the U.N. nuclear watchdog and Iran regarding how to resume inspections at Iranian nuclear sites—including those targeted by Israel and the U.S.—are ongoing.

Grossi stated: “I certainly hope we can conclude this process soon. We are working to hold another meeting, perhaps within the next few days in Vienna, to finalize this issue and begin inspections. If we can reach an agreement before next week, that would be very good.”

The IAEA’s 35-member Board of Governors is scheduled to meet next week.

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, said that Iran is preparing a framework for engagement with the IAEA following aggressive attacks by the U.S. and Israel on its nuclear facilities, and consultations with the international agency on this matter are ongoing.
