Human rights lawyers call for Netanyahu’s arrest in Argentina

Two human rights lawyers have announced that they have filed a formal complaint with Argentina’s federal courts against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

According to Al Jazeera, the complaint calls for Netanyahu’s arrest should he set foot in Argentina, and for investigations into the role of Israeli political and military officials in war crimes.

The filing cites the March 23 incident, during which 15 people—including several aid workers—were killed in Israeli attacks.

The plaintiffs, Argentine lawyer Rodolfo Yanzón and Raji Sourani, director of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, stressed that Netanyahu bears criminal responsibility as a partner in the commission of war crimes, particularly the “deliberate starvation leading to death.” They also accuse him of “murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.”

The Argentine newspaper Clarín reported that Netanyahu may travel to Buenos Aires in September, though the Argentine government has not confirmed this. It is also suggested that he may meet with Argentine President Javier Milei in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

This complaint comes after a similar request was submitted earlier in August by the State Employees’ Association and the human rights organization HIJOS, also demanding Netanyahu’s arrest.
