The Iranian Navy’s missile drill “Sustainable Power 1404” received broad coverage in Western media outlets.

Reuters wrote: “On Thursday, Iran launched its first solo military exercise since the June war with Israel. The drill signals Iran’s effort to reassert its image of strength following the conflict with Israel.”

Reuters added that Iranian state television reported: “Navy units fired several missiles and drones at targets in the open waters of the Indian Ocean during the ‘Sustainable Power 1404’ exercise.”

Newsweek also reported: “On Thursday, Iran began a two-day missile drill in the northern Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman, showcasing the country’s military power following the 12-day June war with Israel and the United States.”

The report added: “The exercise involved missile launches, drone operations, and electronic warfare, underlining Tehran’s determination to demonstrate readiness for any new phase of confrontation.”

Newsweek noted that the drill comes at a sensitive moment: “Israel and Iran recently halted a direct war that caused significant casualties and destruction on both sides. The U.S., which intervened in the war with airstrikes, has since kept up pressure on Iran while continuing to support Israel.”

While open hostilities have ceased, the fragile ceasefire has done little to ease tensions between Iran and Israel. Military drills like Thursday’s serve both as a warning to rivals and a signal of Iran’s preparedness should tensions escalate again.

The Washington Post also reported: “Iranian state television said on Thursday that the country had launched its first military exercise since the end of the 12-day war with Israel, during which naval vessels fired missiles at sea targets in the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean.”

The paper noted that while such exercises are routine in Iran, “the ‘Sustainable Power 1404’ drill comes as Iranian officials seek to reassert their strength after a war in which Israel attacked air defenses, bombed nuclear facilities, and struck other sites.”

NBC News likewise reported: “Iranian state television said on Thursday that the country had launched its first military exercise since the end of the 12-day war with Israel.”

It added that since the end of the war, “Iran has increasingly stressed that it is prepared to respond to any future Israeli attack.”
