Number of journalists killed in Gaza rises to 239

On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the Gaza Government Media Office issued a statement announcing that following the killing of Islam al-Koumi, the number of journalists martyred in Gaza since the beginning of the war in October 2023 has risen to 239.

The statement strongly condemned the deliberate targeting and assassination of Palestinian journalists carried out systematically by the occupying regime, and called on the International Federation of Journalists, the Arab Journalists’ Union, and all media institutions worldwide to denounce these systematic crimes against Palestinian journalists and media workers in the Gaza Strip.

The Gaza Media Office further declared: “We hold the Israeli occupying regime, the U.S. government, and the states complicit in this genocidal crime—namely the UK, Germany, and France—fully responsible for these heinous and brutal atrocities.”

Earlier this month, the Israeli regime assassinated Anas al-Sharif, a prominent Gaza journalist, along with six other Palestinian media workers in a targeted attack. Four of those killed, including al-Sharif, worked for Al Jazeera in Gaza.
