The role of Iran’s wood and paper industry in achieving a resilient economy

In an interview with Mizan, Dr. Ghasem Mohammadi said: “The wood and paper industry, as one of the foundational and job-creating sectors, has high potential to contribute to strengthening the national economy and achieving the goals of a resilient economy. This industry, which is closely linked to natural resources, technology, and both domestic and foreign consumer markets, can play a key role in self-sufficiency and economic resilience under conditions of sanctions and economic pressures. It produces a wide range of essential products — from household goods and furniture to paper required by schools, offices, and the packaging industry. Reducing reliance on imports of these products, especially during sanctions, is one of the main objectives of a resilient economy.”

Emphasizing the role of this sector in job creation across the country, Dr. Mohammadi added: “The wood and paper industry — from forestry and timber harvesting to factories producing paper, particle board, chipboard, and other wood-based products — creates a long chain of employment opportunities. This is particularly important in rural and forested areas where job opportunities are more limited. I must stress that transforming raw materials (wood) into high value-added final products is one of the hallmarks of this industry. This strengthens the economic foundations and increases the country’s gross national income.”

In conclusion, he stated: “The principles of a resilient economy align well with this industry. Resilient economy is built on pillars such as self-sufficiency, endogenous growth, popular participation, and improved productivity. Wood is a renewable resource, and with proper forest management and the use of modern technologies in recycling and utilizing wood waste, this industry can move toward environmental sustainability — fully in line with the principles of a resilient economy.”
