PKK leader: Our armed struggle against Turkey has ended
On Wednesday, July 9, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) declared that the group’s armed operations against Turkey have officially come to an end.
Öcalan stated, "Our armed struggle has voluntarily ended," adding that practical steps will soon be taken to determine appropriate methods for laying down arms.
He further said, "Our transition to a legal phase and democratic politics is a historic victory."
The PKK leader emphasized that the formation of a parliamentary committee in Turkey to oversee voluntary disarmament within a legal framework is of great importance.
Previously, a PKK-affiliated media outlet reported that the group had decided to dissolve itself and end its armed conflict with Turkey, noting that its relations and structure would need to be reshaped.
In a statement, the PKK said it has fulfilled its historic mission and that political parties must now ensure the establishment of a democratic Kurdish nation.
On March 1, the PKK had agreed to an immediate ceasefire and accepted disarmament—an action taken in response to a call from Abdullah Öcalan, the jailed leader of the group.
