Head of Indonesian hospital in Gaza killed in Israeli airstrike
Dr. Al-Sultan was a vocal advocate for civilian protection and medical access in northern Gaza. He frequently provided updates on the humanitarian crisis, particularly during intensified Israeli military operations. His statements drew international attention to the targeting of medical facilities and the collapse of Gaza’s healthcare system.
In October 2024, he spoke about Israeli attacks on the Indonesian Hospital, emphasizing the dire conditions and calling for protection of medical staff, patients, and the facility itself.
The ongoing war has seen a disturbing pattern of targeted attacks on doctors, medical staff, and healthcare facilities. These assaults have not only claimed the lives of medical professionals but have also crippled Gaza’s healthcare system and severely restricted civilian access to life-saving care.
According to the World Health Organization, as of June 2024, 464 medical facilities had been attacked and 727 healthcare workers killed.
Additionally, a report by the Palestinian Return Centre (PRC) in January 2025 revealed that 34 hospitals and 80 medical centers were completely destroyed, with more than 1,000 healthcare workers either killed or missing.
