Record-breaking violence against women in Germany

Germany’s national helpline for violence against women recorded an all-time high in the number of calls in 2024.

According to DPA, the helpline’s annual report, released on Monday, May 5, indicates that over 61,000 calls were made to the helpline last year.

This figure is more than three times higher than the number of calls recorded in 2013, when the helpline for women victims of violence was established.

Experts state that these numbers represent only the tip of the iceberg of the crisis, as many cases of violence against women occur in silence.

According to a recently published report from European sources, one in three women in the European Union has experienced some form of sexual or physical violence in their lifetime.

However, only 13.9% of these individuals reported the incidents or threats of violence to the police.

According to Euronews, violence against women in the European Union remains a concerning crisis, as it was a decade ago, while there are still no standardized definitions or methods for data collection across Europe.
