Center-Right party wins Portugal election
France 24 reported that the early election was held after Prime Minister Luís Montenegro failed to secure a parliamentary vote of confidence due to intense scrutiny from the opposition over his family’s consulting firm dealings.
According to France 24, official election results, with vote counting nearly complete, show that Montenegro’s Democratic Alliance (AD) won 32.7% of the vote, with the Socialist Party (PS) and the far-right Chega party closely trailing in second place.
These results raise the threat of growing political instability within NATO and the European Union, especially as the EU faces increasing trade tensions and efforts to bolster its defense.
The election results indicate that the Democratic Alliance failed to secure the 116 seats needed for a governing majority in Portugal’s 230-seat parliament, winning 89 seats.
