Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a major cabinet reshuffle, appointing Anita Anand as the new Foreign Minister.

Anand, an Oxford-educated Member of Parliament of Indian origin, becomes the first person of Indian descent to hold this position, marking a significant milestone in Canadian politics.

Anita Anand, born on May 20, 1967, in Kentville, Nova Scotia, to Indian immigrant parents, has a distinguished political career. Elected as the MP for Oakville East in 2019, Anand has held several key portfolios under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, including:

Minister of Public Services and Procurement (2019–2021),

Minister of National Defence (2021–2023),

Minister of Transport and Internal Trade (2024–2025),

Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry (2023–2024).

Anand’s appointment is historic, as she is the first Indian-origin individual to serve as Canada’s Foreign Minister. Her extensive ministerial experience and legal background—she is a former law professor—position her to tackle complex international issues.

As Foreign Minister, Anand is expected to prioritize Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs, strengthen multilateral relationships, and address global issues such as the situation in Ukraine and Gaza, continuing the Liberal government’s stance on a two-state solution for the latter. Her role will be crucial in shaping Canada’s foreign policy amid a turbulent geopolitical landscape.
