Tragic shooting of black teen by U.S. police

The shooting occurred around 10 a.m. on May 1, 2025, in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Warsaw Avenue in East Price Hill, Cincinnati.

Cincinnati police responded to a report of a stolen Kia SUV earlier that day. The vehicle’s GPS allowed police to locate it in the apartment complex parking lot.

Police identified four individuals inside the stolen vehicle. When officers approached, all four fled on foot in different directions, prompting a chase. Ryan Hinton was one of the individuals who fled.

Body camera footage captures Hinton tripping, with officers later reporting they heard a metallic sound, believed to be his gun hitting the ground. Hinton then ran between two dumpsters, where he encountered another officer.

The second officer fired four to five shots. Hinton died at the scene despite attempts to provide medical aid. The entire incident, from the moment the suspects fled the vehicle to the fatal shots, unfolded in approximately six seconds, highlighting the rapid escalation.

On Friday, May 2, 2025, Ryan’s family, including his father, Rodney L. Hinton Jr., met with Cincinnati police to view the body camera footage. The family was described as “distraught,” with Rodney unable to watch the entire video. Attorney Michael Wright noted the experience was “very difficult” and “traumatic” for the family.

Approximately two hours after the meeting, Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, allegedly drove his car into Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Henderson, who was directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati during graduation ceremonies. Henderson, a recently retired deputy working a special detail, died from his injuries. Rodney was charged with aggravated murder, and prosecutors described the act as “calculated and premeditated.”

As a young Black man, Ryan’s death has drawn attention amid ongoing national concerns about police use of lethal force, particularly in encounters with Black individuals.
