UK and France on Path to Recognizing Palestine

Amid escalating Israeli regime crimes in the occupied territories, the British Foreign Secretary announced negotiations with France and Saudi Arabia to recognize the state of Palestine at the upcoming UN meeting in June.

According to the Financial Times, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, as part of efforts to achieve the West’s two-state solution and noting that unilateral recognition of Palestine by European countries like Spain, Ireland, and Norway has had no impact on the conflict, stated: “The UK is willing to recognize Palestine when it has a real impact on the ground, not just as a symbolic gesture.”

Lammy’s remarks come as French President Emmanuel Macron recently announced that Paris could use the UN conference opportunity to recognize Palestine, a meeting co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.

The British Foreign Secretary claimed: “When the UK recognizes Palestine, no one has a veto. We will continue discussions with partners on this matter.”

The potential coordinated recognition of Palestine by the UK and France, as two permanent members of the UN Security Council, would carry significant symbolic and diplomatic weight.

However, this initiative still faces major obstacles, including Israel’s explicit opposition and a lack of agreement on the terms of recognition.
