Araghchi: Fourth round of indirect talks with the U.S. to be held in Rome

Speaking on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting, Araghchi responded to a question from Mizan regarding the Russian Foreign Minister’s statement about Russia’s readiness to store Iran’s uranium if Tehran and Washington agree. He noted that certain countries have consistently been consulted on nuclear issues, playing significant and constructive roles in past negotiations from Iran’s perspective.
He added, “This role can continue to exist. We have consulted with these countries and will continue to do so. Depending on the progress of indirect talks with the U.S., these consultations could take on a more serious form.”
Commenting on the continuation of U.S. sanctions, Araghchi stated, “U.S. sanctions send a negative signal during negotiations.” He emphasized that provocative actions by counterparts during talks could cast doubt on their seriousness, noting that differing viewpoints, internal disagreements, and lobbying efforts exist within the U.S.
The Foreign Minister stressed, “We monitor all issues and make decisions accordingly.” He added that negotiations will proceed as planned, noting, “Every negotiation is based on resolving disputes; if there were no disputes, there would be no need for talks.”
Regarding the location of the next round of Iran-U.S. negotiations, Araghchi said, “According to the Omani host, the next round will be held in Rome.” He further remarked, “In my view, the role of the three European countries has diminished due to their misguided policies. However, we are not pleased with this and are therefore willing to hold the next round of talks with them in Rome. So far, four rounds of these negotiations have taken place. We are keen to resolve this issue through international understanding and a global perspective.”
Araghchi underscored that while Iran continues to engage with European countries, the primary negotiations are with the U.S. He also highlighted, “The release of frozen funds is part of the sanctions that must be lifted.”
