England seeks to intensify border policies
Starmer demanded greater undefined authority for law enforcement, closer coordination with other nations, and greater collaboration between law enforcement agencies. The primary objective of this plan, according to experts, is to keep immigrants out of England.
The British Border Security Command's two-year budget will be increased by Starmer from 75 million pounds ($97 million) to 150 million pounds ($194 million). This expense will pay for 100 skilled inspectors and cutting-edge surveillance equipment.
Like earlier British Conservative governments, Starmer's Labor government is working to stop immigrants from coming from war and poverty. One of the primary entry points for immigrants from France into England is the English Channel. According to French officials, at least 60 migrants have died this year trying to enter England. For this reason, 2024 has been announced as the deadliest year for immigrants since 2018.
The British Conservative Party (opponents of the current government) argue that Stormer should not have suspended the previous government's (Rishi Sunak's) plan to transfer refugees to Rwanda. The Rwanda plan, according to its proponents, serves as a deterrent. However, many lawyers and human rights organizations argue that sending migrants thousands of miles away to a country they do not want to live in is unethical and illegal.
Meanwhile, the British government has asserted that it will grant entry to migrants who have been stranded on the isolated island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean for years. A temporary camp on this island has housed about 60 Sri Lankan migrants for more than three years. An American and British military installation is located on this isolated island. Years ago, these immigrants had applied to enter England as asylum seekers.
For years, there were intricate legal disputes concerning the fate of this group, and the British government had previously opposed their entry into England. 16 children are among the 60 inmates who spent three years incarcerated on Diego Garcia Island.
