Continuation of fatal shootings by US police
The latest figures show that police in the United States have killed at least 1,151 people as of November 2024, a figure that suggests the crisis in deadly police encounters in the United States will continue.
According to the Mapping Police Violence website, police officers in the United States killed at least 1,151 citizens in the first 10 months of 2024 in 49 states and the District of Columbia; this figure includes deaths of citizens due to fatal shootings and the use of Tasers and other equipment used by police in dealing with citizens.
The states of New Mexico, Wyoming and Montana recorded the highest rates of American citizens killed by police.
This figure is at least 31 more cases compared to the same period in 2023; At the same time, assessments showed that the number of citizens killed by police in the United States is likely to reach 1,378 by the end of 2024.
The study also showed that there have been only 11 days since the beginning of this year without a recorded case of killing of American citizens by police in the country.
The report by the Center for Police Violence also shows that at least 86 black people were killed by police officers in the United States; This means that black people are three times more likely to be victims than white people (based on population proportions).
Counts of police killings in the United States are mostly compiled by the media and data centers; the first count by the Center for the Study of Police Violence in the United States was conducted in 2013; that year, at least 1,077 people were killed by US police officers.
