Haredi military exemption crisis intensifies in Israel

According to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) Foreign Relations and Defense Affairs Committee convened this afternoon (Tuesday) to review the Haredi military exemption bill, while the meeting was accompanied by numerous sidelines.
Even though the bill's goal was to establish a deal between the government and the Haredi, it has encountered fierce resistance from a number of political parties as well as a sizable portion of Israeli society.
Yair Lapid, the leader of the opposition, called the bill a scam and stated: "It is not in the interest of either party to implement this bill. This will increase the burden of military service on other citizens and erode Israel's security.
On the other hand, the Haredi community also opposes some of the provisions of the bill and has demanded changes to it. Haredi leaders believe that the draft exemption bill should be amended in a way that respects their lifestyle and religious beliefs.
The disagreements over the draft exemption bill in the committee have become so intense that some coalition members who opposed it may resign from the government.
The head of the Knesset Foreign Relations and Defense Committee, Yuli Edelstein, is adamant that the bill be passed and put into effect, but opponents think that doing so will create significant social division and difficulties.
