46th execution carried out in the U.S.
Tennessee continued its series of executions in 2025 by carrying out another death sentence.
According to reports, Harold Wayne Nichols, 64, was executed via lethal injection. This marked the 46th execution in the United States in 2025, a figure unprecedented since 2010.
The executed sentence also represents the third execution in the state of Tennessee this year.
Nichols’ lawyers had argued that he deserved clemency due to his confession and his transformation into a reformed man while behind bars.
Two more executions are planned in the U.S. later this year.
The state of Georgia is scheduled to execute Stacey Humphries on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.
Additionally, Georgia is set to carry out the execution of Frank Aten Vals on Thursday, December 18, 2025.
If these executions proceed, the U.S. will have executed 48 people in 2025, a number not seen since 2009.
Experts attribute this increase to the political climate under U.S. President Donald Trump and the influence of the Supreme Court.
Earlier, Mark Allen Geralds, a 58-year-old inmate in Florida, was executed via lethal injection.
This execution, carried out on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, made Florida the state with the highest number of executions in the U.S. in 2025.
Geralds’ lawyers had previously argued that his trial was unfair and that the jury acted with bias against him.
Geralds became the 18th inmate executed in Florida so far this year, surpassing the previous state record of eight executions in 1984, which had been matched in 2014.
