Seraj: Amendment to the directive on preserving human dignity and values is a reaffirmation of protecting and advancing citizens’ rights

Nasser Seraj, Deputy for International Affairs of the Judiciary and Secretary of the High Council for Human Rights, told Mizan that the “Directive on Preserving Human Dignity and Human Values in the Judiciary,” and the emphasis of the Head of the Judiciary on this directive and its reforms, are of great importance.

He reiterated: “Human dignity is a fundamental principle of religious teachings and the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Therefore, the Judiciary, as the refuge of the oppressed and the institution responsible for handling legal disputes, is obligated to observe this principle at every judicial and administrative stage.”

Referring to the importance of citizens’ rights, the Secretary noted: “In this directive, definitions and provisions related to citizens’ rights, as well as the rights of defendants and litigants in judicial bodies and courts, have been expanded, and the oversight mechanisms in this regard have also been strengthened.”

He continued by highlighting the duties of the High Council for Human Rights in protecting and advancing human rights and citizens’ rights:

“In addition to pursuing the human rights demands of the Iranian people in international forums, the High Council for Human Rights is tasked with referring reports received regarding possible violations of citizens’ rights within the country to the Citizens’ Rights Protection Boards located in provincial judicial offices and following up on the outcomes.”

Seraj further stated: “The primary function of the High Council for Human Rights is the safeguarding of citizens’ rights, and based on this mission, it can assist other branches of the Judiciary to advance their work with greater strength and determination.”
