Mamdani’s transition team puts women in charge
Speaking at a press conference in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Mamdani introduced the team that will guide his transition until he formally takes office, saying:
“New Yorkers deserve a government they can trust. When our city celebrates the inauguration of a new chapter, we will also celebrate a new beginning for New York.”
Mamdani, who defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in the mayoral election, is set to officially assume office on December 31, 2025.
During the transition period, leadership will rest with a group of female officials who previously served under Bill de Blasio, Eric Adams, and Michael Bloomberg.
Among them:
- Elana Leopold, a progressive political strategist, has been appointed Executive Director of the Transition Team.
- Maria Torres-Springer, former First Deputy Mayor;
- Lina Khan, former Chair of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC);
- Grace Bonilla, a leader in New York’s nonprofit sector; and
- Melanie Hartzog, a municipal budget expert, will all serve in key advisory and organizational roles.
At his post-election press conference, Mamdani outlined his vision for a results-driven City Hall, saying his administration would “build a city government capable of delivering on its promises.”
He added: “We’ll create a broad network — working with community organizers on the frontlines of improving city governance, seasoned professionals with proven track records, policy experts from across the country and the world, and local workers who know better than anyone what their neighborhoods need.”
Mamdani also revealed that the White House had not yet contacted him following his victory, but stated that he is ready to engage in dialogue with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“I’m open to talking with President Trump about ways we can work together to serve New Yorkers — whether it’s delivering on campaign promises to reduce the cost of living or addressing the many issues New Yorkers have shared with me,” Mamdani said.
