Italian reporter fired over Gaza question to EU
Gabriele Nunziati, a Brussels-based reporter covering EU news for Nova in Rome, told The Intercept that just one month into his assignment, he received an email informing him that his collaboration had been terminated.
The decision came after Nunziati, on October 13, asked Paola Pinzio, a senior EU Commission spokesperson, during a press briefing:
“You have repeatedly stated that Russia should pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine. Do you believe Israel should also pay for rebuilding Gaza, given that nearly all of its civilian infrastructure has been destroyed?”
Pinzio replied: “It is certainly an interesting question, but I have no opinion on it.”
A video of the exchange quickly circulated online, drawing attention to Nunziati’s name in the media.
Nova spokesperson Francesco Civita later confirmed that the termination of Nunziati’s contract was indeed due to his question regarding Gaza.
