Zohran Mamdani Becomes Mayor of New York
According to U.S. media reports, Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democrat, secured over 50 percent of the vote, becoming mayor of New York — the most populous city in the United States and the nation’s financial hub.
Andrew Cuomo, his main rival, won around 43 percent of the votes despite enjoying strong financial backing from New York’s billionaires and landlords. The former governor of New York, who had waged an aggressive campaign against Mamdani, conceded defeat and said he respected the choice of New Yorkers.
Cuomo had resigned four years ago following allegations of sexual misconduct, which he never admitted to. These accusations continued to shadow him throughout the election campaign.
Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, gained about 5 percent of the votes and failed to make a significant impact on the outcome.
Reports say the New York mayoral election saw participation from more than 1.8 million voters — a symbol of generational change in American politics.
Mamdani made history as the first Muslim Shia mayor of New York City, with family roots in India, and as one of the youngest mayors elected in modern times.
He is the youngest mayor of New York in the past 100 years and the first Muslim New Yorker to take the reins of the city at the heart of America’s financial world.
Focusing on working-class issues, Mamdani turned what was once considered a weak campaign into a national focal point. He defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo for the second time, crushing Cuomo’s hopes of returning to politics after his earlier loss in the Democratic primaries in June.
Mamdani’s victory represents a win for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party at a time when national Democrats remain divided over how to confront U.S. President Donald Trump — himself a New York native.
Trump mocked Mamdani as a “communist,” claiming that if elected, he would “take over the city.”
Now, one of the new mayor’s major challenges will be dealing with Trump, who had even threatened to deport him from the United States.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote:
“As President of the United States, I won’t let this crazy communist destroy New York. Rest assured, I hold all the levers and the cards. I will save New York and make it great again — just like I did with our beloved United States.”
