Outrage in Israel over Netanyahu nepotism
The Hebrew newspaper Maariv reported that, due to the uproar this decision caused in the occupied territories, the appointment of Yair Netanyahu, son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to the Executive Council of the World Zionist Organization has been postponed for two weeks.
Sources in Israel stated that, if appointed, Yair Netanyahu would receive a luxury car and a salary equivalent to that of a minister for five years.
The opposition voiced strong objections to Yair Netanyahu’s potential appointment.
Yoaz Hendel, head of the “Reserve” party, said: “We are completely outraged. Is it possible that Yair could be appointed to such a position? Anything is possible in Israel.”
Yair Golan, head of the Democratic Party in the occupied territories, wrote on X: “Yair Netanyahu, a despicable individual who has devoted his life to spreading destruction and division, does not deserve to represent the Jewish people, nor to hold a government position with privileges. We will not allow this.”
The opposition party “There is a Future” also stated: “We are deeply shocked by this shameful decision to appoint Yair Netanyahu to a high-ranking position in a Zionist institution. We will not sign off on such an agreement within Zionist bodies.”
In response to the criticism, Israeli Minister Miki Zohar said: “There is division, hypocrisy, corruption, and sheer populism among the opposition. How can the opposition not feel shame when appointing dozens of their own associates and family members to domestic institutions, yet they try to block the appointment of one person solely because his last name is Netanyahu? Shame on you.”
