Putin hails “Major Success” in Poseidon nuclear torpedo test
During a visit to a military hospital, Putin revealed that this marks Russia’s second nuclear weapons test within a week.
According to Reuters, limited information is available about Poseidon, but the torpedo is said to be an autonomous, nuclear-powered underwater weapon capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. It is reportedly designed to trigger massive radioactive tsunamis, rendering coastal areas uninhabitable.
Putin stated that Poseidon is unmatched globally in both speed and depth, making it “impossible to intercept.”
He added that its destructive power significantly surpasses that of Russia’s intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat SS-X-29 — also known as “Satan II.”
Last week, Putin oversaw a nuclear launch exercise and announced the successful test of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile — a weapon capable of carrying nuclear warheads and evading all existing missile defense systems, according to Moscow.
Russia has described the Poseidon and Burevestnik systems, first unveiled in 2018, as strategic responses to U.S. efforts to build a missile defense shield following Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and NATO’s continued expansion.
