40th execution of 2025 carried out in the United States
Norman Merle Grim Jr., 65, became the 15th person executed in Florida this year by lethal injection.
According to the Associated Press, with this execution, Florida now holds the record for the highest number of executions in the United States in 2025, followed by Texas and Alabama.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, Florida’s previous annual record was eight executions in 2014. This year, the state has carried out more executions than any other U.S. state, with Texas and Alabama each executing five inmates.
Grim had recently waived all remaining appeals.
Since the beginning of 2025, a total of 40 executions have been carried out across the United States, while at least 18 more inmates remain on death row, scheduled to be executed later this year or in 2026.
According to official schedules, Florida is set to carry out two more executions next month, both authorized by the state’s Republican governor.
Brian Frederick Jennings, 66, is scheduled to be executed on November 13, and Richard Barry Randolph, 63, on November 20—becoming the 16th and 17th executions in Florida this year.
