Witkoff to resign from Trump administration after Gaza truce deal
Two sources familiar with the matter told Middle East Eye that Witkoff, who played a key role as a negotiator in reaching the Gaza ceasefire deal, is expected to resign from the Trump administration to refocus on his business ventures.
Both sources said Witkoff plans to leave the administration after an “exhausting” round of shuttle diplomacy across the Middle East, in order to return to his private business activities.
Witkoff’s departure could raise questions about Washington’s commitment to the later stages of the 20-point peace plan connected to the Gaza ceasefire.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will personally chair the so-called “Peace Committee” tasked with overseeing Gaza. However, both American and Arab diplomats have expressed doubts about how active Trump will be — particularly regarding Israel’s adherence to the ceasefire terms.
During a brief meeting between Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the sidelines of the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, Witkoff stated that he intended to remain involved in later phases of the process, especially in Gaza’s reconstruction.
