Trump holds a joint meeting with leaders of 9 Arab and Islamic countries
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump met with leaders of 9 Arab and Islamic countries on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York and discussed the future of Gaza after the war.
The leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan attended the meeting.
According to Al Jazeera, Trump presented a plan at the meeting whose main focus was the complete elimination of Hamas's role in governing Gaza, the gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army from the region, and the transfer of security responsibility to a joint force of regional countries. He also called on Arab and Islamic governments to allocate extensive financial assistance for the reconstruction and governance of Gaza during the transitional phase.
After the meeting, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan described it as "very fruitful," and Trump expressed his satisfaction, calling the meeting "great."
After the meeting, the US President claimed that his plan had been "well received" and that Arab and Islamic leaders had expressed their views on it. Trump considered the plan "a starting point for peace" and expressed hope that with the support of regional countries, it would be possible to pave the way for an end to the war and the start of the reconstruction process in Gaza.
However, informed sources told Al Jazeera that some Arab and Islamic leaders had expressed concern about the diminution of the Palestinian role in the proposed political structure. Israeli officials have also expressed opposition to some of Trump’s provisions, particularly regarding the status of the Palestinian Authority.
