Trump’s popularity plunges again in polls
A poll conducted by YouGov for The Economist showed that the share of Americans unhappy with President Donald Trump’s economic performance exceeds the share of those satisfied by 22 points.
The survey found that 35% approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, while 57% disapprove.
As Newsweek noted, in a similar poll conducted by the same firm just a week earlier, the gap between disapproval and approval was 17 points.
At the same point in Trump’s first term, which began in 2017, disapproval of his economic performance outweighed approval by only 9 points.
Democrats are hoping that growing dissatisfaction with Trump’s economic policies will continue, giving them an opportunity to capitalize on the issue and secure victory in the 2026 midterm congressional elections.
The survey also found that Americans’ discontent with Trump’s handling of inflation has set a new record: disapproval now exceeds approval by 34 points.
Additionally, over the past two months, the percentage of Americans who rated the economy as “poor” rose from 28% to 39%. Those who described it as “fair” dropped from 39% to 32%, while the share rating the economy as “good” fell from 26% to 22%.
Another poll, conducted by Beacon Research and Shaw for Fox News between September 6–9, surveying 1,004 registered voters, revealed that 52% believe Trump has made the U.S. economy worse, while 30% said he has improved it.
Newsweek’s overall analysis concluded that Trump’s overall approval rating among Americans remains in a state of free fall.
