Secretary of the High Council for Human Rights Arrives in Geneva / Seraj: International bodies must stop being passive toward crimes of the usurping Zionist regime
The high-level Iranian human rights delegation, led by Nasser Seraj and accompanied by representatives from the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches, entered the Human Rights Council headquarters in Geneva to attend the 60th session.
Upon his arrival, the Secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights told reporters: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has always emphasized its commitment to human rights principles based on Islamic and human values.”
Referring to the delegation, Seraj stated that human rights should not be used as a tool for political pressure against independent countries. He added: “The Islamic Republic of Iran continues to implement its human rights commitments decisively and vigorously defends the rights of the Iranian nation.”
Addressing the 12-day aggressive war imposed by the Zionist regime and the United States against Iran, which resulted in the martyrdom of many Iranian citizens, he said: “The crimes of the Zionist regime and the United States during this unlawful aggression once again revealed their true nature and openly displayed violations of human rights.”
Seraj warned against the silence of international bodies regarding the blatant crimes of the U.S. and the Zionist regime, noting: “Such inaction reflects double standards and politicization. The Zionist regime, disregarding international law, has committed extensive crimes in Gaza, killing or injuring over 200,000 people, yet if the slightest incident occurs in Iran, human rights advocates quickly react.”
The Deputy for International Affairs emphasized that international bodies, including the Human Rights Council, are expected to act more decisively against the crimes of the Zionist regime.
According to the report, Seraj’s agenda in Geneva includes participation and speeches at the Human Rights Council, meetings with officials from member states, and discussions with senior UN officials.
The 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council began on September 8, 2025, and will continue until October 8, 2025.
The Human Rights Council (HRC) replaced the Commission on Human Rights in 2006, bringing changes in membership, UN affiliation, authority, and mandate execution. On March 15, 2006, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution establishing the HRC to replace the Commission on Human Rights.
The Human Rights Council has 47 member states, elected individually and directly by a secret ballot of the majority of the General Assembly. Membership is based on equitable geographical distribution: the African Group holds 13 seats, the Asia-Pacific Group 13 seats, the Eastern European Group 6 seats, the Latin American and Caribbean Group 8 seats, and the Western European and Others Group 7 seats.
The Council holds three regular sessions each year (February/March, June, and September/October) totaling 15 weeks annually. Since its establishment, 59 regular sessions of the Human Rights Council have been held.
