Sánchez: Spain’s ports and airspace closed to Israeli military activity
Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, said: “We must work for peace in the Middle East. Everything we have done so far has not succeeded in reducing the suffering of the Palestinian people.”
According to Al Jazeera, he continued: “We have decided to close Spain’s ports to Israeli ships carrying defense systems. We have decided to increase humanitarian aid to the residents of Gaza.”
Sánchez added: “Spain will increase its contribution to UNRWA funding by €10 million. We have decided to close our airspace to all flights carrying weapons or ammunition to Israel. We will also ban transport companies that supply the Israeli military with fuel through Spanish ports.”
In another part of his remarks, the Prime Minister said: “There is a difference between defending one’s home and bombing hospitals or killing people through famine. The government will enact a legitimate law to enforce the current arms embargo against Israel. What Israel is doing is destroying a people.”
In a public speech broadcast on local television, Sánchez stated: “We hope these decisions will help increase pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government to ease the suffering of the Palestinian people.”
According to Sánchez, anyone directly involved in what he called “genocide” will be barred from entering Spain.
