London underground staff launch nationwide strikes
The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union announced that its members on the London Underground will strike at various times for seven days starting September 5.
The union says London Underground management has refused to seriously address their demands regarding pay, fatigue management, shift patterns, and reduced weekly working hours.
In a separate dispute over pay and working conditions, RMT members on the London Docklands Light Railway (DLR) will also strike during the week starting September 7.
Following the announcement of strikes on the London Underground, commuters are facing major disruptions to their journeys to work.
The scale of the disruption means that it does not only affect Underground passengers, as commuters are forced to find alternative routes to reach their workplaces.
Transport for London (TfL) stated that the entire city’s Underground network will be heavily disrupted from September 7 to September 11.
Very limited or no service is expected on these dates, with no trains running before 8 a.m.
In a separate dispute, no service will operate on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) on Tuesday, September 9 or Thursday, September 11.
Union members are striking over pay and working conditions, including a demand for a 32-hour workweek.
The union stated that the management’s dismissive approach has generated widespread anger and distrust among staff, leading a large number of workers to vote for strike action.
