Haaretz: No one can stop Israel’s collapse
In its editorial on Thursday, the Hebrew daily wrote that the regime is heading toward a catastrophe that grows larger by the day.
The paper warned that “the war on the Gaza Strip has gone beyond all reasonable security and humanitarian limits,” admitting that talk of “defeating Hamas, imposing security control over Gaza, and retrieving the captives” has lost all relevance in light of the realities on the ground.
The editorial further noted that, given the warning of Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir regarding the plan to occupy Gaza City, the operation “Chariots of Gideon 2” cannot be justified on security grounds.
Haaretz added that after all the heads of the security agencies in the cabinet took a firm stance in support of a prisoner-exchange deal—while warning of the heavy cost of this plan for the lives of soldiers and captives, the exhaustion of the army, and Gaza’s slide toward military rule—the usual security slogans can no longer be put forward.
The paper emphasized that the families of the Israeli captives are facing a cabinet detached from reality and unwilling to compromise. While the captives’ families try through protests to influence the cabinet’s stance, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s position remains unchanged, as he believes the war benefits him politically.
According to the report, no one can stop the destruction of Gaza and the collapse of Israel.
Haaretz concluded by calling for an end to the destruction, the return of the captives, and the adoption of the “day after the war” plan proposed by Arab states. It warned that very soon the opportunity will be lost and it will be too late—Tel Aviv must stop the war immediately.
