Araghchi to Lavrov: Decision on extending resolution 2231 is for the security council and its members
Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, and Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, in a phone conversation, discussed developments regarding Iran’s nuclear issue, particularly the actions of three European countries ahead of the legal expiration of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, as well as the issue of cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
During the discussion, it was emphasized that the three European countries, due to their failure to fulfill their JCPOA commitments on one hand, and their alignment with the U.S. in attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities on the other, have committed a blatant violation of Resolution 2231. Therefore, they lack the legal and moral authority to invoke the JCPOA dispute resolution mechanism with the aim of reinstating revoked Security Council resolutions.
The foreign ministers of Iran and Russia also assessed the path forward for nuclear negotiations and stressed the conclusion of Resolution 2231 at its scheduled time.
Regarding the European countries’ idea of extending Resolution 2231, the Iranian foreign minister explained Iran’s principled position, emphasizing that, from Iran’s perspective, the decision on extending Resolution 2231 rests with the Security Council and its members.
Both sides in the conversation highlighted the continuation of interaction and consultations between Iran and Russia at various levels to better advance their shared positions.
