U.S. plan to support Hezbollah disarmament
According to two sources cited in an Axios report, this request is part of Washington’s broader effort to intervene in Lebanon’s internal affairs and push for the disarmament of the Resistance.
Two weeks ago, under heavy pressure from the Trump administration, the Lebanese cabinet took an unprecedented decision to prepare a plan for Hezbollah’s disarmament, aiming to place a monopoly on arms under the control of the Lebanese state.
The move was strongly rejected by Hezbollah, which dismissed it outright and warned the Lebanese government against implementing the plan.
Since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah last November, Israel has continued carrying out near-daily airstrikes in Lebanon. It also maintains a military presence at five bases in southern Lebanon, effectively occupying parts of the country, and has declared it will not withdraw as long as Hezbollah remains a threat.
The Trump administration has now asked Israel to take an initial step by withdrawing from one of these bases and significantly reducing its airstrikes for several weeks, in order to give the Lebanese government “space to implement the disarmament decision.”
