Pakistan’s supreme court orders release of Imran Khan
Despite the court’s ruling, Khan will remain in custody due to the ongoing “Al-Qadir” corruption case.
Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, presiding over the hearing of Khan’s bail petition, approved the request and ruled in favor of his release. Khan is the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Earlier, in late January, Pakistan’s Accountability Court delivered its final verdict in the corruption case against Imran Khan and his wife, sentencing the PTI leader to 14 years in prison and his wife to seven years.
The £190 million corruption case is among the major charges against Khan. He is accused of illegally facilitating the transfer of this money to a wealthy Pakistani businessman during his tenure as prime minister, bypassing legal procedures and violating the country’s laws.
Imran Khan and his party, PTI, have consistently rejected all legal and security cases against them, calling them politically motivated and accusing the government of seeking revenge against its opponents.
