Football world in shock after Diogo Jota’s sudden death

The 28-year-old Liverpool forward died in the early hours of today in a fatal crash that occurred at 1:30 AM on the A-52 highway, at kilometer 65, near the town of Palacios de Sanabria.
According to reports, the vehicle carrying Diogo Jota and his brother André — a player for Penafiel — veered off the road and caught fire. Eyewitnesses called emergency services at 112 to report the incident. They stated that the car was engulfed in flames, which also spread to surrounding vegetation. Emergency services in the Castilla y León region have confirmed the accident.
This heartbreaking news comes just two weeks after Jota’s wedding to his wife, Rute Cardoso, in Porto.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 for €44.7 million. Since then, he made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.
During his time at Liverpool, he won three major trophies in English football:
– Premier League (2024–25 season)
– FA Cup (2021–22)
– League Cup (2021–22)
The Portuguese international had a brief stint with Atlético Madrid, who signed him from Paços de Ferreira in 2016 for €7 million. He scored in a friendly match against Crotone (2–0), but never played in an official match for the club.
That same summer, he was loaned to Porto, and later to Wolverhampton, who eventually signed him permanently in 2018 for €14 million.
This tragedy is not only a devastating loss for Jota’s family and friends but also for the football community and Liverpool fans around the world.
