“Unconstitutional and Reckless”: U.S lawmakers slam Trump’s attack against Iran

According to The New York Times, Republican Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky, who has drafted a resolution to block unauthorized military action against Iran, wrote on social media platform X on Sunday that Trump’s move was “not in accordance with the Constitution.”
Rashida Tlaib, a Muslim Democratic congresswoman from Michigan, reposted Massie’s message and addressed her colleagues, writing: “Do not make the mistake of dragging our country into another war. You can stop the president and the warmongers in Congress by signing the War Powers Resolution.”
James Himes, a Democratic representative from Connecticut, also criticized Trump on X, saying: “We both swore an oath to defend the Constitution. I take that into account before dropping bombs.”
Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, stated: “Trump’s action is clearly unconstitutional. Only Congress has the authority to take this country to war. The president does not have that power.”
Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, called Trump’s strike against Iran a “horrific misjudgment” on X and said the Senate would hold a vote to determine “whether senators want a third reckless war in the Middle East.”
He stressed: “The American people are overwhelmingly opposed to another U.S. war with Iran.”
Referring to claims by the Israeli foreign minister that the attacks have delayed Iran’s nuclear program by two to three years, Kaine added: “Is this what drove Trump to recklessly order today’s bombing?”
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leader in the House of Representatives, said in a statement: “Trump promised to bring peace to the Middle East but failed. Now, the risk of war has significantly escalated.”
