35% turnout in South Korea’s early presidential election

Yonhap News Agency, citing the commission, reported that 15,423,607 voters cast their ballots in the two-day early voting period, which ran from 6:00 AM on May 29 to 6:00 PM on May 30 (local time). The main election is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

According to the report, this early voting turnout is the highest since 2014, surpassing the 36.93% recorded in the 2022 election.

Early voting for South Korea’s presidential election began last Thursday at 3,568 polling stations nationwide and continued until Friday evening (local time).

Media reports indicate that the main competition in this election is among three leading candidates: Lee Jae-myung from the opposition Democratic Party (DP), Kim Moon-Soo from the ruling People Power Party (PPP), and Lee Jun-Seok from the New Reform Party.

According to the latest poll conducted on Wednesday, May 28, before the early voting began, Lee Jae-myung led with 49.2% support, followed by Kim Moon-Soo with 36.8%, and Lee Jun-Seok with 10.3%.

The winner of this election will serve a five-year term as South Korea’s president.
