Threats of resignation over new Shin Bet chief
The Times of Israel reported that Shin Bet officials view the selection of David Zini as the new head of the agency as politically motivated. They are concerned that Zini’s hardline views may conflict with Shin Bet’s core values and could undermine its non-partisan nature.
No official resignations have been submitted so far, and Shin Bet has not commented on the matter.
In leaked statements, Zini expressed regret over the “severe tension” between the war’s objectives, namely the destruction of Hamas and the release of Israeli prisoners.
In a conversation with residents of border areas, Zini stated: “The most important issue is the destruction of Hamas and Islamic Jihad. That is the most critical part, and that’s what we are working on.”
These remarks sparked anger among those present, who accused Zini of failing to understand the military’s responsibilities and its role in protecting borders.
Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Zini’s statements represent a significant departure from the perspective of former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, indicating a shift in Netanyahu’s view of Shin Bet’s role in the ongoing war and his broader defense strategy.
Meanwhile, the new Shin Bet chief, in a conversation with residents near the Gaza border, made controversial remarks against Muslims, claiming: “Since the birth of Ishmael, we have continuously had intelligence warnings that Muslims intend to kill Jews!”
